We continue to run the ball effectively and piled up 285 yards in rushing on the evening. The load was carried by a multitude of backs once again and both fullback Calvin Pollard and wingback Andrew Owens each carried for over 100 yards apiece on the night.
Our defense again stepped up and kept us in the game all night after being put in bad situations time and time again after offensive turnovers. Despite giving up twelve points to the Rangers, our defense forced two turnovers and provided the offense with great field position all night. Although it was a great team effort, Justin Ruiz and Sean Wallace had great nights on the defensive side of the ball and played a big role in holding Estacada to two scores.
We left Taft last week pretty banged up and had some big questions as to whether or not some of our young men would be able to play versus Estacada. A true football player knows that the only time you're likely not going to be hurt during the season is during that first ten minutes of the first practice of the season. With the help of our trainers our men received the proper treatment during the week and pushed through some pain to step on the field with their teammates in order to give us the best opportunity to win on Friday night.
Red Zone Performance
We put ourselves in positions to score throughout the evening. We were ineffective as an offensive unit in the Red Zone this week and we have to do a better job of taking advantage of those opportunities. One of our team offensive goals is to be 100% in the Red Zone every week. We missed that mark considerably on Friday. We must execute with all eleven men taking care of their assignment on every play. There were too many breakdowns in assignments that forced us backwards as opposed to punching the ball into the end zone.
Turnovers, Turnovers, Turnovers
In total we turned the ball over six times on Friday night. It doesn't matter who you're playing, it is virtually impossible to win any contest when you are that careless with the football. Our turnovers didn't cost us any victories in the previous two contests but that was a different story Friday. If we are going to continue to be competitive and make a run for a playoff birth we must take better care of the football.
